the conflict within the initial phase of 'the stranger' would be the internal struggle within the protagonists psyche between his underlying human spirit, and the overwhelmingly depressive influences surrounding him. these experiences have drained him of his spirit and shaped him into a monotonistic individual with an almost drone like character lacking any form of expression or feeling.
you could relate the emotionally barren state brought forth by exeptionally powerful emotion evoking experiences within the protagonists life, to the central current event of the country in which the author resided, just prior to the time in which the book was published, world war 2. often an individual upon returning to the state of a peace time citizen from that of a war time soldier, being quite frequently bombarded with scenes of unthinkably grotesque and disturbingly chaotic slaughter of their fellow human beings, would leave that individual numbed to any form of emotional relation in a normal social atmosphere.

Ahahaha!!! Im loving the wording... Nice to get around there being no main conflict!! Hopefully this book with catch something soon... If you were to have written the book im sure there would be some interesting phrases in it!!!
But do you find it kind of odd the book is sooo blah maybe the authur had a pooring life or something could you image living a life like or main charcter M.M?
